Solico Metal is proud to share that we have received the Sustainability Award at the CISC/ICCA BC Region Awards of Excellence in Steel Construction 2026.
The award recognizes our work on a structural steel retrofit of an existing warehouse and office facility in Surrey, British Columbia, completed for Garcha Bros Meat Shop & Poultry in collaboration with BMP Engineering & Inspection Inc. and the broader project team.
Preserving an Existing Building While Meeting Modern Demands
The project involved structural engineering retrofitting within an existing facility with tilt-up concrete walls and a suspended slab. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, the project team developed a custom steel solution that allowed the existing building to be reused, strengthened, and adapted for current operational requirements.
Solico Metal’s role included the design support and fabrication of the steel structure from our Calgary fabrication shop. Components were manufactured in Calgary, shipped to the Surrey project site, and installed by a local erection crew.
This approach helped increase structural capacity while preserving the existing building and supporting continued operations throughout construction.
A Practical Sustainability Story
For Solico Metal, sustainability in steel construction is not only about new materials or new buildings. It is also about practical decisions that extend the life and performance of existing infrastructure.
Steel was an ideal choice for this retrofit because of its strength, adaptability, and recyclability. By using a custom steel solution, the project demonstrated how structural steel can help existing buildings meet modern demands efficiently and sustainably, without always starting from scratch.
The project is a strong example of how retrofit work can reduce unnecessary demolition, support adaptive reuse, and deliver long-term value for owners and occupants.
Recognition from the Steel Construction Industry
The CISC/ICCA Awards of Excellence in Steel Construction recognize outstanding projects, teams, and contributions within Canada’s steel construction industry. Solico Metal is honoured to have this project recognized in the Sustainability category and proud to be acknowledged alongside other leading projects and partners in the BC Region.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) for this recognition, and to Keanin Loomis, President & CEO of CISC, for presenting the award.
We also congratulate and thank our client, Garcha Bros Meat Shop & Poultry, our project partner BMP Engineering & Inspection Inc., and everyone involved in bringing this project to completion.
